285,000 Solar Acres—and More

The Obama administration has just opened up 285,000 acres of federal lands to solar energy development, enough to potentially power over 7 million homes in the next decade.  17 solar energy zones have been designated in 6 western states, from Utah to California, where development can move forward quickly because environmental assessments have already been done.

Another 19 million acres, for which environmental impact studies have not been conducted, are also potentially open for development.  But would-be solar farmers must do environmental assessments on these lands and fund the assessments themselves.

The Natural Resources Defense Council, the Audubon Society and other environmental groups have endorsed the move.

No denunciations have yet been issued by the climate-loony, fossil-fueled Republican Party, but it’s early days.
