Big Brother, Facebook & the Conservative Party

Posted on April 5, 2011

Big Brother has taken over the Conservative Party.  Beware what you put on Facebook because it might get you banned from Conservative rallies, as it already has done in two cases at two Conservative rallies in Ontario.

On  Sunday Awish Aslam, a poli-sci student at the University of Western Ontario, together with a friend, were barred from a Conservative rally in London Ontario.  Her crime?  Posing with Michael Ignatieff on Facebook.

Monday, there was a non-partisan get-out-the-student vote rally at the University of Guelph.  When students attending that rally showed up at the Conservative rally in Guelph the same day, they were also turned away.  They had been identified as attending the rally from pictures on Facebook.

Evidently, the Conservatives don’t want students to exercise their citizenship and vote.

But they like Facebook.  It has a kind of Big Brother appeal.  Useful for filling out the Conservative Party enemies list.

Orwell’s 1984 is evidently being used as an instruction manual for the Conservative Party. I wish I was more surprised.
