“O, the praties they grow small....”

When Falmouth Kearney, 19 years old and fleeing the potato famine in Ireland, landed in New York harbour in 1850, he might have felt hopeful or he might have felt that disaster had chased him mighty far from home.

I’m sure what he did not imagine, standing on that alien shore, was that his great grandson would grow up to be the first African American President of the United States.

Not every bad turn ends poorly.
