Cold versus hot, 2007 to now: Is the climate tilted?

Posted on September 2, 2010

Climate science predicts that with global warming, the ratio of coldest days to hottest days should favour the latter.    That is the number of high temperature records set should exceed the number of low temperature records set.

The following is record of world high and low temperatures for the period 2007 to now.

The length of this period is arbitrary.  A record of temperatures going back a century would show a statistical trend of roughly equal hot and cold records each year at the beginning of the century shifting to a situation, as unequivocally demonstrated here, where the number of hot temperature records in a given year far exceeds the number of low temperature records.

High to low ratios, 2007:  40 to 8 equals 5 to 1

High to low ratios, 2008:  35 to 18 equals slightly less than 2 to 1

High to low ratios, 2009:  78 to 14 equals more than 5 to 1

High to low ratios, 2010:  286 to 12 equals nearly 24 to 1 (!)

Summary:

High to low ratios, 2007 to September 2, 2010:  439 to 52 equals more than 8 to 1

Normal high to low ratios ought to be 1 to 1.  The same time a century ago, they were.

As for this year, 2010, it’s kind of like you had one leg two inches long and the other nearly four feet.  You’d be tilted.

And so is the climate.
